Accurately capturing these areas of the sport is the key to building a franchise mode worth playing throughout the cycle of a game. The official Madden NFL 23 trailer has arrived introducing FieldSENSE, the new gameplay system exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The same goes for scheme and play-calling. Roster construction has become a massive part of NFL coverage, to the point where even more casual fans understand the basic structure of contracts. Give us the option to restructure contracts until our cap situation gets as bad as the Saints did this past offseason. Give us more cap casualties and blockbuster trades for draft picks. If Madden were able to add front office philosophies, team directions (rebuilding, win-now mode, tanking, etc.) and owners with personalities that dictate what you can and can’t do - the aforementioned Football Manager does this at a high level so it’s definitely possible - it would add more variety to the game and make upgrading your roster more challenging and rewarding. As things stand now, all 32 teams are essentially behaving the same way, which is obviously unrealistic. And other franchises, NBA 2K and Football Manager, have had no problem incorporating more complex contract options into their games to increase realism.īut realistic contracts are just the start. This one shouldn’t be too hard to add to the game as contract data is freely available on the internet at sites like Over the Cap and Spotrac. And if you got Bill Belichick - or the fake version of him that’s in the game - you can pretty much scrap your entire gameplan for a new one at the half. So, if you’ve got Jon Gruden as your head coach, you can install a robust selection of plays going into the week but your ability to adjust that selection throughout the game would be restricted. You can make adjustments to your selection of plays based on what you’re seeing from the defense in the first half, and the number of plays you can change could be based on your coaching staff’s attributes. I do like the addition of halftime adjustments, and that concept could be carried over to my proposed system. Having a poorly-rated assistant might limit your play-calling options. Having a higher-rated coordinator might allow you to include more plays in the game plan every week. This could be another way to increase the importance of the coaching staff. So one week, when you’re facing a team that great at defending inside zone runs, you might opt for more outside zone run plays in the game plan. One way to capture that more realistically might be forcing users to pare down the formations and plays they have to choose from in a given game. If my best corner can’t guard their best receiver, it doesn’t matter how much we focus on man coverage that week, we’re still not going to be able to play a whole lot of Cover 1. I’ve come up with some ways the Madden team could build upon this foundation to give gamers a more realistic franchise experience.Ĭapturing the game-planning aspect of football is almost impossible to do in a realistic way, so it’s tough to blame the Madden devs for choosing a system that includes in-game attribute boosts on certain play types.īut a good game plan doesn’t necessarily make a player better at certain aspects of the game instead, it puts that player in situations that make his job easier through play-calling. This is certainly a good start but, hopefully, that is all it is and the mode continues to receive this type of attention in the years to come. Based on the five-minute video EA dropped on Tuesday, that promise has been fulfilled, with the mode getting a complete overhaul…ĭeep Dive into Franchise Improvements coming to #Madden22: To the credit of the game’s developers, after fans complained about the franchise mode being ignored in last year’s game, the Madden team promised upgrades for this year’s version of the game. A week after the cover reveal and the first trailer for the game, the folks at EA dropped an in-depth video on the upgrades made to the game’s franchise mode, which has largely been neglected over the past few years much to the dismay of customers. Information on Madden 22 continues to roll out.
